TikTok Video Not Downloading? 10 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

Ninety-eight percent of TikTok downloads work on the first try. The remaining two percent are the ones people write to us about, so we have seen every pattern. Below are the ten most common reasons a TikTok will not download and the fix for each, in the order we usually recommend trying them.

This guide is tool-agnostic. Everything applies whether you are using ClearTik, another downloader, or trying to save through the TikTok app itself.

1. The video is from a private account

This is the single most common cause. Private accounts do not expose their videos to the public web, so no third-party tool can access them. Not ClearTik, not any competitor, not a browser extension. If you can only see the video by being logged in as an approved follower, it is private.

Fix: there is none. Ask the creator for the file directly, or record your screen during playback for personal use.

2. The link was copied incorrectly

A partial link, a link with tracking noise, or a link copied from a screenshot instead of the share menu will fail. Symptoms: the downloader shows "invalid URL" or an empty preview.

Fix: go back to TikTok, tap the share arrow on the video, choose Copy link explicitly, then paste. Do not type the URL by hand, do not copy from the browser's search results page.

3. The video was deleted or blocked in your region

TikTok removes videos that violate its guidelines, and creators can delete their own uploads at any time. TikTok also enforces region blocks (music licensing, government restrictions, age gating). A downloader has the same visibility as your browser, if the video is not reachable, it cannot be saved.

Fix: open the original link in an incognito tab in your browser. If it does not load there either, the video is gone or geo-blocked. A VPN can sometimes help with geo-blocks, but not with deleted content.

4. Your browser is blocking the download

Some mobile browsers block .mp4 downloads in private/incognito mode. Some desktop browsers with strict security settings quarantine any download from an unfamiliar domain. Chrome occasionally flags MP4s as "file may be harmful," which is a generic warning, not a real threat.

Fix: on mobile, switch from private mode to a normal tab. On desktop, click Keep when Chrome asks, or check your browser's Downloads settings and remove any blocklist entry.

5. An ad blocker is breaking the fetch

Aggressive ad blockers and privacy extensions occasionally block the API call that fetches the video source. uBlock Origin, AdGuard, and Privacy Badger have all been reported to cause this in specific configurations.

Fix: whitelist cleartik.com in your extension. If you would rather not, disable the extension for one page load, complete the download, and re-enable.

6. The TikTok API is temporarily rate-limiting

TikTok occasionally throttles requests during traffic spikes. When this happens, a downloader might return "could not fetch video" for a minute or two, then work again on its own.

Fix: wait 60 seconds and try once more. If it still fails, try a different video, if that one works, the first one has a specific problem, not the tool.

7. The video is a slideshow, not a video

TikTok photo slideshows are treated as a set of images plus a soundtrack, not as an MP4. Older downloaders assume every post is a video and fail on slideshows.

Fix: use a downloader that supports slideshows. ClearTik detects photo posts automatically and gives you a Download All Photos button plus individual image saves. If your current tool does not, that is the tool's limitation, not TikTok's.

8. Slow or unstable network

A TikTok HD video can be 15 to 40 MB. On a weak cellular signal, the download stalls or times out. Symptoms: preview loads, download starts, then stops at 20 percent.

Fix: switch to Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is what is bad, try again on cellular. On desktop, restart the router if downloads have been slow across all sites, not just this one.

9. Full storage on your device

iPhones and Androids both need a small buffer of free storage to write new files. If you are within a hundred megabytes of full, downloads will silently fail or land as zero-byte files.

Fix: clear space. Delete a few videos, offload an app you have not used, empty the Recently Deleted folder in Photos. Then retry.

10. In-app browsers (Instagram, X, Facebook)

If you tapped the ClearTik link from inside another app's built-in browser, the download may silently fail. In-app browsers restrict many file operations to keep users on their platform.

Fix: open the URL in your real browser. In Instagram tap the three dots and choose Open in External Browser. In X tap the share icon and Open in Safari or Chrome. From there the download works normally.

If none of the above worked

• Try a completely different TikTok. If it works, your original video has a specific issue (private, deleted, region-blocked).
• Try a different browser. Chrome and Safari are the most reliable.
• Try a different device. If it works on your laptop but not your phone, the problem is device-specific (network, browser, or storage).
• Clear your browser cache and try again.

The pattern behind almost every failure

Nine times out of ten, a broken TikTok download traces back to one of three things: the video is not actually public, the link is not clean, or the browser is doing something restrictive. Fix any of those and you are back in business.
